Low Kang tables are only found in cold weather places in North China where the kang - a heated platform … moreLow Kang tables are only found in cold weather places in North China where the kang - a heated platform is the only warm place in a room. Most often the kang is near an outside wall and it is being heated by firewood or coals fed through an exterior opening. The low table from Shanxi province has multi-uses: it can be a eating table, a writing table, or sewing table or the person seated on the kang. This table is sometimes called a "bridge" table because of the construction. The top is dovetailed to the two sides ending in scroll feet. The apron is verticulated in a geometric pattern with dragons at all four corners. The dragons are abstract and very typical of dragon designs from Shanxi Province. The wood could be walnut though it is hard to tell. It has good weight.

The table had been painted once and the original finish has been stripped. The drawer is probably a later addition. It is quite an attractive piece, particularly being double sided and the dragons add interest. less
