An impressive hand-carved Indo-Portuguese style queen four-poster bed, handcrafted in India circa 2000 and finished in a deep ebony-black tone. Monumental yet finely detailed, this highly decorative bed combines the architectural presence of an Anglo-Indian Raj bed with the pierced carving, floral arabesques and geometric ornament associated with Moorish and Mughal Revival design.
The focal point is the tall, three-part headboard, constructed with an elaborate sequence of hand-carved and pierced wood panels. Each section incorporates repeating floral medallions, scrolling foliage, openwork lattice carving and rhythmic geometric borders. Three shaped crests complete the upper edge of the headboard, giving the composition an architectural quality reminiscent of carved jali screens and decorative woodwork found throughout India and the broader Islamic world.
Four tall square posts frame the bed, each terminating in a pointed onion-form finial. Their strong vertical lines provide the dramatic presence associated with a traditional four-poster or Anglo-Indian Raj bed while allowing the intricately carved headboard to remain the principal decorative feature. Broad side rails and a substantial footboard balance the openwork carving and give the frame a grounded, sculptural silhouette.
The design is best described as Indo-Portuguese and Anglo-Indian in style, with additional Moorish, Mughal and Islamic Revival influences. Indo-Portuguese furniture developed through the meeting of European forms and Indian craftsmanship, often incorporating carved floral decoration, architectural panels and dense geometric ornament. This later interpretation draws from that decorative tradition without being represented as an early antique example. Its dark finish also gives it the dramatic character often associated with Moroccan interiors, Spanish Colonial furniture and Portuguese Baroque design.
This hand-carved Indian queen bed would make a commanding centerpiece in a Mediterranean, Moorish, Spanish Colonial, Moroccan-inspired or globally collected bedroom. It can also provide depth and contrast within a restrained contemporary interior, particularly when paired with natural linen bedding, plaster walls, travertine, antique wood furniture and warm neutral textiles. The dark architectural frame works especially well in interiors inspired by Michael S. Smith, Jacques Garcia or layered European and Middle Eastern design.
The bed is configured for a queen-size mattress. Because the frame is handcrafted, buyers should confirm the exact internal mattress opening and their preferred slat, foundation or box-spring requirements before installation.
Overall dimensions are approximately 60 inches wide, 81 inches deep and 86 inches high. The carved headboard measures approximately 71 inches high, and the bed rails measure approximately 17 inches high. Mattress, bedding and decorative furnishings shown in the staged photographs are not included unless specifically stated otherwise.
The bed dates to approximately 2000 and remains in good handcrafted condition. Minor surface variations, small irregularities in the carving and differences between individual decorative elements are inherent to handmade construction and contribute to its character. Please examine all photographs for the most complete understanding of the finish and condition.
With its queen-size proportions, tall four-poster profile and richly carved openwork headboard, this Indo-Portuguese style bed offers the visual impact of architectural furniture while remaining practical for a sophisticated bedroom. It is an excellent choice for designers and collectors seeking a hand-carved Anglo-Indian bed, Moorish queen bed, Mughal Revival four-poster bed or dramatic statement bed with genuine artisanal presence.
