Hand carved in Southern France circa 1780, the two-piece composition depicts the Virgin Mary gracefully supporting the Christ Child, a tender and timeless representation of maternal devotion and divine protection.
Executed in carved wood with its original polychrome and water gilded finish, the figure is richly detailed in high relief. The Virgin is draped in flowing robes enhanced by luminous gold leaf, contrasted by delicately painted flesh tones and soft brown hair. The Christ Child rests across her arm, holding a globus cruciger adorned with a red cross, symbolizing His dominion over the world. Both figures are rendered with serene, downward gazes and gentle gestures, conveying a sense of calm reverence and spiritual intimacy.
The sculpture retains a beautifully aged patina with visible craquelure to the gilding and paint, consistent with its 18th century origin. It is presented on a later carved and giltwood base, elevating the piece and giving it presence as a devotional or decorative focal point.
