Jean-Michel Folon was born 1 March in Uccle (Brussels). His father worked as a paper merchant. Having been immersed in this environment, Jean-Michel would remember it forever: “It was probably there that I started drawing.”
1939-1945
During the German occupation, Folon spent his childhood in Genval, in a house beside the lake. He and his family would often go for a walk in a park in nearby La Hulpe.
By the early 1960s, when he visited the United States, he was selling graphic work to Esquire, Horizon, Atlantic Monthly and Time; by 1964, his drawings were on display at the Librairie Le Palimugre in Paris.
His designs often included a conventionally dressed Everyman figure, with a stereotypical brimmed hat and arrows instead of eyes, marooned in an empty landscape or penned in by slablike skyscrapers. As Folon put it, "we live surrounded by boxes." In 1967 he even represented the Statue of Liberty with prison bars around her mouth."
This poster is an exhibition poster for the 1980 edition of the Signature book sale held in the Palais de Chaillot. This event presents signature books "Poètes Essayistes Nouvellistes XXXIIe" from the collection of the museum of French monuments.
