He drew inspiration from the environment that he encountered as well as from his own personal struggles with chronic illnesses that plagued him during much of his life. His graphic work is outstanding. In 2005, Shaw was named a Duncanson Artist-in-Residence at the Taft Museum of Art, which also exhibited a Shaw solo show that year.
