Signed lower right, 'H. Chapette' for Henri Chapatte (French, 1918-1997) and painted circa 1975. Artist card, verso, bearing list of prizes and inscribed with title, 'Valee De La Loue, Vers Clerion'.
Illustrator, painter and patriot, Henri Chapatte was a resident of Besançon and, along with engraver Paul Simon, established a clandestine printing operation led by printer Gabriel Plançon to make false identity cards, leaflets, and vignettes sold on the public highway for the benefit of the families of those shot and deported from the Doubs, for example, the hostages of November 1, 1942. Chapatte also resided in Noël-Cerneux, an artist's attraction and watchmaking village in Haut-Doubs, situated halfway between Morteau and Le Russey. He passed away in Roset-Fluans, Scey-Maisières. He was the recipient of awards including winner and Member of the Salon des A.F. Paris, the Medal of Arts, Sciences and Letters, Portrait Award from the Grand Prix International Meeting (1970), and a Silver Medal (1972). Chapatte was also an Officer of the Order of Celtic Knights.
