Do we have some serious modern art collectors out there? Well this lithograph of contemporary pop art phenom, Donald Baechler (1956-) is for the serious. A late 1980s piece of Baechler was originally designed as an art piece to replicate a menu for his patron's home dinner party. Yes, Patron Emily Fisher Landau, art collector extraodinaire, donator to the Whitney and founder of the Fisher Landau Center for the Arts in Long Island City (opened in 2015), had up and coming artist Donald Baechler design a menu for her society dinner party. The original artwork of the front and back of this menu was donated by Fisher Landau to the Whitney Museum. Fisher Landau started to collect Baechler's in 1985.
This lithograph was printed in the early 90s in a limited edition run of two hundred and twenty-five. The piece is hand initialed D.B. by the artist with just the "9" for the year signed showing (the rest of the date remains under the matting). The piece is also watermarked LAE for Limited Art Editions -- the printer and authenticator who created the edition. This piece is like 2 Baechlers in 1 as the front and back of the menu are like 2 different Baechler Flower images for which he is famous. When they made this lithograph edition they carefully folded each one so that the authenticity of the menu's seam would be in place. This is such a unique and rare piece even beyond other Baechler's on the market.
In a whimsical Donald Baechler touch, he turns this lithograph into a collage by inserting a Fortune from a Fortune Cookie (he is known for incorporating fortune cookie themes into his art). It says: "Now is the time for something New". The piece is sealed with the original typed Provenance Sheet from the printer.
An avid collector of visual imagery, Donald Baechler files away representations of maps, toys, upheld thumbs, and playing cards to later source for his compositions. With stylistic references to modernist masters and Pop Art added to these doses of pop culture, Baechler is celebrated for his works that overflow with the joy and idealism of an adult who hasn't quite forgotten the innocence of childhood.
Baechler was first represented by Tony Shafrazi, a New York art dealer who became famous for discovering Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf in the 1980s. Considered to be one of the most influential artists to emerge from Shafrazi's stable, Baechler is the subject of numerous reviews, solo exhibitions, and critical essays, and has had his work collected by important figures in the art world, such as Eli Broad and Peter Brant.
How I love treasure hunting and discovering this piece was so exciting. It needs the right home. I will foster it and hang it on my walls until then but feel free to ask any and all questions.
