A superb piece showing the wonderful craftsmanship of the brass workers This hardwood chest which originally was painted in red some of which has now worn away is decorated with brass studs and fretwork Dowry chests like this were often used in the export of spices, rugs, and silks to the West The chest has the more recent edition of brass carrying handles and a purpose made bracket footed stand The chest has a candle compartment, and a brass hasp which can be used to hold a lock The chest is 23” high on its stand, 37” long and 16” wide See less
