A stone Lasara head made by the Nias People of Indonesia. The Indonesian island of Nias has earned an international reputation for its dramatic forms of indigenous visual arts. The Lasara is a mythological creature with a dragon-like head and a bird-like tail, and acts as a royal protective creature of South Nias. The need for protection against evil spirits and the forgotten dead is expressed in everyday artifacts and arts on which are depicted protecting animals connected with myths from the creation story.
