1980 covered bowl measures 5 inches tall with lid, Approximately 6 inches in diameter by
Harding Black, (1912-2004 An acclaimed ceramist, sculptor, painter, bricklayer, and teacher, Black was born on a farm in Nueces County, Texas and moved with his family to San Antonio in 1916. Initially a painter, he was taught by Rudolph Staffel in 1933 to make wheel- thrown pottery and in the same year began to teach children's ceramic classes at Witte Museum. .
1933-1956 Ceramic instructor, Witte Museum, San Antonio, Texas 1937-1939 Superintendent of ceramic installation in reconstruction project co-sponsored by the National Youth Administration and the WPA, San Antonio, Texas. 1956-1997 Studio Potter Harding Black made functional stoneware pots in both coil built and wheel thrown form and also made jars, vases, pitchers, and compotes. He is known for his extensive glaze research., being considered a pioneer of modern handmade pottery in Texas. As a self-taught chemist, he reproduced ancient Chinese and Oriental glazes and was famed for sharing his extensive catalog of glazes he had personally formulated..
In 1980, Harding Black donated his personal papers, correspondence, photos, etc. to the Smithsonian Research Collection.. The Harding Black Ceramics Research Center at Baylor University in Waco, Texas houses his collection and archive.
