Worked in the Neoclassical style in France in the early 1900’s, this large plaster capital on wooden pedestal is of … Read more Worked in the Neoclassical style in France in the early 1900’s, this large plaster capital on wooden pedestal is of the Composite order. Composite order is a style of architecture that is associated with Imperial Rome, with the oldest surviving example being the Arch of Titus (erected in 82 AD). The order combines the volutes of the Ionic order with the acanthus leaves of Corinthian capitals.

Each side of the capital has a pair of large volutes flanking a foliate cup. The cup sits on top of an egg and dart border above bead and reel. Floral stalks rise up from between the two tiers of acanthus leaves with downturned tips, known as caulicole, that support the volutes. The capital has been given a cream color, but it has since developed a beige patina. A white rectangular pedestal with thick base molding has been added more recently, giving the entire piece a height of 62 ½ inches.

Our large plaster capital makes for a lovely piece of decorative art. The top of the capital was left unfinished, resulting in a large opening that can support faux greenery, such as a boxwood ball (see photos) or a silk flower arrangement. A creative idea would be to use the capital as a base for a coffee table. See less
