A rare, fine quality 19th-Century French paper knife or letter opener handcrafted of olive wood and brass of a spaniel dog. He is circa 1890 in age and has lovely glass eyes.
Paper knives were used in Europe from the 1700s to open book pages that were not cut during the manufacturing process. Paper knives are often mistaken for letter openers. This exceptional and rare desk accessory could be used in a pinch as a letter opener.
It would be a handsome gift for the discerning collector of antique stationery implements or singular dog collectibles.
