Offered is an antique 19th c. English copper jelly/aspic mold. This high quality mold is made from a heavy gauge of copper and was manufactured by the the famous English coppersmiths Benham & Froud c.1870. Benham & Froud traded at Chandos St., London from c1855-1924
describing themselves as general metal workers, art metal workers and lamp manufacturers. Their signature makers mark is the Orb & Cross and the famous 'orb' was adopted because the firm made the present cross on the dome of St Paul's Cathedral in 1821 and it could be seen from their shop in London. In addition to the Orb & Cross, an artist's mark and a stock number were also often inscribed on each piece.
This lovely mold is in superb antique condition. The Orb & Cross mark is present as is a sweet heart mark on the opposite side of the mold - this most likely being the individual artist's mark. The mold is also inscribed with the the stock number 649. The tin lining has worn away and would need to be re-tinned to be used for cooking. This piece has been professionally polished and will make a wonderful addition to your culinary mold collection. Please see all of the photos.
This mold is 2.75 inches tall, 4.25 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.
