On one side of the vase … Read more Large Meiji period Satsuma porcelain vase on a Napoleon III period gilt metal frame. On one side of the vase is depicted a deity, probably Amaterasu, with children playing at her feet. She is recognizable by her golden earole, representing the sun disk, Amaterasu being the goddess of the sun. On the opposite side, Amaterasu with in front of her three figures in court clothes, a teenager and two older men, probably emperors, indeed in Japanese culture Amaterasu is the ancestor of all emperors. The two scenes are framed by decorations of bamboo branches and golden foliage in light relief, typical of Satsuma porcelain, are presented on a black-brown glaze. The base of the vase has lion footed feet, topped with leaves and foliage, the rim has two wreaths of foliage and flowers chased in metal. The neck of the vase presents a hoop with an openwork gallery, punctuated by two handles with volutes. This frame of the Napoleon 3 period takes the characteristics of the Louis 15 style.
