Wallace was born in Toledo, Ohio and grew ip in Massachusetts attending Phillips Academy and Amherst College. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia (1939-40) and the Art Students League in New York (1945) before earning his Masters in art education from NYU in 1948.
