This … Read more This is an Edgar Chahine (1874-1947) "Campo Santa Margherita Venise" hand-signed etching. It is number 52 of 100 made. This etching depicts one of the bustling outdoor markets in Venice, Italy. Because most of his works were destroyed in a fire or flood, this is a truly rare find. This etching is displayed under glass in a simple frame.

Chahine was an Armenian immigrant who lived in Italy and France, first enrolling at the Armenium Lyceum Moorat Raphael in Venice and the Academia di Belle Arti. here he studied under Antonio Emolao Paoletti. Later he arrived in Paris taking courses at the Academie Julian under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens.

Among the prizes awarded Chahine was the Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition Paris in 1900 and the Gold Medal at the Venice Exhibition in 1901. He was was elected a full member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and he was commissioned to create illustrations for books, including the Histoire Comique by Anatole France and Dans L'Antichamber by Octave Mirbeau. In 1906 he produced 110 prints depicting Paris carnival life for Eugene Rodrigues' Fete Foraine de Paris.

There was a major loss of a major portion of his works to a studio fire in 1926 and floods in 1942, but despite this and major unfortunate world events including the second world war he managed to continue a career as a relatively successful artist. Because a retrospective in Milan created new interest in his work, The Venice Biennale had an entire room with only his works. He became a French citizen and died in Paris in 1947.

This etching measures 14 inches by 8.5 inches, and framed it measures 19.5 by 14 inches. See less
