The magic of this piece is that it's carved from one piece of teak wood. Each ring of the chain is paired together, implying that it's known as a West African wedding chain. The heads on these are often used as masks, and are carved out to fit the face. This piece is also a solid piece of wood, with no room for a face behind it. Now is where it gets interesting. The back of the head has a small hole near the top center, implying that it can be hung on a wall. Or door. And THIS makes sense because at the bottom of the chain there is a somewhat triangular link, which seems to me is a means to knock on a door from the hanging chain. And the head also appears to be a devil more than a tribal figure, so we may just have to call it a "devil door knocker".
