A bold vase in the "brutalist" style from mid-century Germany, made by Scheurich Keramik one of the leading ceramic factories of the time.
The visible inside of the vase has an attractive green glaze. The main body and part of the upper rim is grey with a texture that has been described as like lava, no doubt due to the tiny bubbles and slightly rough texture. It also has dark marks perhaps to suggest the heat and intensity of molten lava. It also has three decorated panels with black background and an abstract pattern in white which is reminiscent of the spikes of an electrocardiogram taken at a time of excitement.
This is an interesting and thought-provoking example of mid-century German decorative arts.
The bottom is embossed with the word "Foreign" to indicate the piece was made for foreign sale and 522 and 20, with 522 representing the shape and 20 representing the height in centimeters.
The vase is 8 inches (20 cm) tall and 3.5 inches at its broadest point. The top is 2.75 inches wide. The base is 2 inches wide.
