From the makers, Landers, Frary & Clark, a set of 30 table knives and forks with carved, ivory colored Celluloid handles, circa 1900-1920.
Landers, Frary & Clark was a housewares company established in 1862 and based in New Britain, Connecticut. Many of the company’s items were marketed under the brand Universal. Celluloid, developed in the late 19th century, launched the modern age of man-made plastics. It was used as an inexpensive imitation of ivory.
The celluloid handles show a scroll and floral pattern, joined to heavy silver plated blades and forks with ribbed ferrules.
The pieces have a good weight. A truly beautiful and unusual set for a memorable tablescape.
