Offering a RARE abstract ceramic art studio hand made pottery box, by renowned ceramicist HENRY KENDALL GERNHARDT. This item is signed by the artist on the bottom and dated 1983. This indicates that this work of art was personally done by the artist himself, as most of his works have only an engraved logo from the studio. Most of the artist's pieces are quite small and usually made of blue barium glaze and have a common vase form This particular box is quite large considering the size of his other work and most importantly it has his entire signature engraved in the bottom with the date. There are no boxes of this artist work found on-line making this large box a RARE one-of-a-kind collectors piece.
The lid of the box has an abstract-brutalist style design with a high gloss glaze. The bottom of the box has raw earthenware finish with a high gloss glaze near the wavy top and in the interior of the box. The interior of the box is a gray-purple color. The wavy design of the lid fits perfectly on the wavy design on the bottom of the box.

HENRY GERNHARDT BIOGRAPHY:
Henry Kendall Gernhardt is a renowned American studio potter known for his exquisite stoneware and barium-glazed pottery. His works often feature a soft texture and bright blue barium glaze, making them highly sought after by collectors. Gernhardt has had an expansive career, studying and working under notable artists like Peter Voulkos, Frans Wildenhain, and Stanley Boxer. He has also taught art at various institutions, including Syracuse University and the School for American Craftsmen.
Born and raised in New England, he was introduced to the world of art by an Aunt who taught him to sketch and paint. Expanding out from that creative base, he began experimenting with clay as an artistic medium while still in high school. He continued his art education at college, earning an M.F.A. from Syracuse University, a B.S. from the Rochester Institute of Technology, an associate in applied art, and a Fulbright Scholarship to the State School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, Finland.
His expansive career has included numerous awards, exhibitions, commissions and gallery showings of his work. He headed the ceramic department at the School of Art, at Syracuse University. A Ford Grant gave him the opportunity for research in Japan, where he documented eleven ancient kiln sites. He was also the artist for the archeological survey of Philips Castle. A list of his accomplishments would go on to fill an entire book.
