Chinese scholars meeting scroll, colored inks on silk, mounted on a shimmering blue and ecru silk brocade in a floral … Read more Chinese scholars meeting scroll, colored inks on silk, mounted on a shimmering blue and ecru silk brocade in a floral pattern over a lattice of wanzi characters, signed, with six red seal marks. The image size is 23.5" wide x 42.5" high. With a tan silk cord makio and kakio at the top and rosewood jikusaki at the bottom. The outer scroll cover repeats the mounting brocade. Circa early 20th century, no later than mid century.

A masterfully drawn depiction of two Chinese scholars discussing ancient poetry, sitting at a table formed of flat rock atop a garden gongshi. There is a teapot, teacups, a censer, a vase with a sprig of plum blossoms and a box on the table. The right hand scholar sits on a natural root form chair, the other on a low, lacquered stool.
