Antique late 19th century Arts & Crafts amphora vase by Sidney T. Callowhill. Bright gilding with an iris flower design in relief. Signed S. T. Callowhill; blank by Jean Pouyat, Limoges. Measures 8 1/2" tall x 5 1/4" diameter. Good condition - slight wear to gilding.
Sidney Thomas Callowhill (1867-1939) was born in Worcester, England and came to the United States around 1885. He lived in Brooklyn, NY; Baltimore, MD, and finally Boston, MA, where he died in 1939. By profession Callowhill was an Illustrator, painter, designer, and decorator of porcelain and glass. His work was exhibited by the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston, 1897, 1907, 1917, 1920-22, 1924-27; League of Mineral Painters, NYC, 1898; New York Society of Arts & Crafts, 1925 (solo); National Alliance of Art & Industry, traveling exhibition, 1932. Callowhill was a member of the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston, 1907-27.
