The "Mandarin" is a Western term which designates a senior official, a literate and educated person. In China for more than 1300 years (between the years 600 and 1905) the high administration was held by the famous Caste des Mandarins.
The sculptures presented here are a modern version of the Chinese ancestors. We can notice that only the face really changes from one ancestor to another, however, facial expression is always benevolent. Represented in frontal view and luxurious and colorful ceremonial clothes, the dignitaries are supposed to guarantee the prosperity of the family.
Coming from traditional Chinese art which dates back to antiquity and which allows descendants to keep a link with their ancestors, these three statues of mandarins attract luck and joy.
Each statue is marked with two cachets, signatures of the artist.
