The architectural elements of naturalistic forms combined with Arts and Crafts style, this hand-knotted wool antique Persian Farahan rug astounds with its beauty and draws inspiration from William Morris. It features a concentric quatrefoil medallion surrounded by all-over scrolling vines composed of a cascading flowering branch pattern spread across the abrashed rust colored field. Designed to impress, the symmetrical floral branch pattern unfolds lavish details of opulent frondescence, arabesque vines, roundel rosettes, hyacinth, and birds perched upon tree of life motifs. The verdigris colored trefoil shaped corner spandrels are outlined with cloudband accents and echo the floral branch pattern within the field. It is enclosed with an alternating pinecone, cypress tree, and boteh border flanked with double inner and outer Meander guard band with subsidiary guard stripes. The overall composition is distinctly reminiscent of the Arts & Crafts movement carpet designs of late nineteenth and early twentieth century England. The Arts & Crafts movement celebrated craftsmanship and simple, informal folk styles of decoration. Leading designers of the movement, such as William Morris and C.F. A. Voysey, embraced hand-knotted rug making and crafted high-quality woven textiles in contrast to the overly decorative manufactured goods popular at the time.
