This hand-knotted wool Beni Ourain Moroccan rug features a lozenge trellis pattern on a neutral background. Bold, thick lines composed of diagonal squares form a diamond lattice on a field of creamy-beige. Historical richness and full of Ancient Berber symbolism, this Beni Ourain rug features traditional symbols of protection, femininity and conception. It is heavily ornamented with diamonds and ​X-shape represents the open arms and legs of a woman who is ready to conceive and the power of womanhood. Smaller diamonds, when housed inside of larger diamonds, is known to predict a pregnancy. This symbol is referred to as a lozenge. Some of the lozenges are filled with the Burdock motif with latch-hook edges are protection symbols and meant to capture evil spirits. The fish-bone or twig motif is known to represent the male and invoke the power of the male and his role in reproduction. The piece is framed with a thin solid line border and fringe hands to one side tying the rug together to completion. The style of the ancient Berber tribes, including the Beni Ourain, influenced artists and designers of the Mid-20th Century.
