There is a large hill with buildings and trees behind the lighthouse. Slightly abstracted, Shively has rendered a powerful scene. The locale appears to be Cassis, France; most likely created during his trip to France in 1930-1931. The piece is signed "Shively '31" (l.r.). The image is in very good condition consistent with age. We just had it beautifully framed to museum standards. Dimensions: Apprx. 10"x11 7/8"unframed; 16"x20" framed.

The piece is beautifully framed in an ebonized wood moulding with a silver colored patterned fillet that enhances the palette of the watercolor. It is double matted with 100% cotton rag acid free mat and backing and conservation UV protectant glass. A fantastic look and ready to hang.
Paul Shively was born in Lisbon, Ohio in 1897. His family moved to Cleveland where he graduated from Glenville High School in 1916. He attended the Cleveland School of Art. After graduating he shared a studio with Carl Broemel.

He traveled to France to paint in 1930, settling upon his return in New York where he worked as an illustrator. In Cleveland, he exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art May Shows. He summered in Rockport, another painters' favorite. (From AskArt)
