One of Klee's fascinating early graphic works, “Komiker” depicts a dramatically distorted face partially obscured by a grotesque theatrical mask. Klee described the subject as “a grotesque mask on a grave and moral head,” explaining that the mask represented art while the man remained hidden behind it.

The original “Komiker” was created by Klee in 1904. This vintage example was published posthumously in the second edition of “The Prints of Paul Klee” in 1947.

The edition was printed in the summer of 1947 in an edition of 2,000 copies by the Meriden Gravure Company, Meriden, Connecticut, and The Golden Eagle Press, Mount Vernon, New York. The publication reproduced a selection of Klee's graphic works and is now more than 75 years old.

The original 1904 date, title, and Klee signature are reproduced within the image and are part of the printed composition; this print is not hand-signed by Paul Klee. The title is also printed on the reverse.

A fantastic and wonderfully strange early Klee image and a great opportunity to own a genuine vintage 1947 printing of one of his most distinctive early works.
