A wonderful original opal serpentine stone sculpture of a woman signed by the Zimbabwean artist N. Masakwa. The striking black stone polished and also raw as if unfinished showing great depth of color. Black lacquered wood base stand included, not attached. Sculpture without base measures 12"H.
Shona sculpture is widely accepted as the most important art movement to emerge from Africa in the twentieth century. Seminal group exhibitions organized during the 1960s-1970s period include Musée Rodin, Paris, France and at the Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA), London, UK.
