Signed lower left. … Read more This is an amazing vintage mixed media surrealist painting by well listed artist Mario Grimaldi (American, 1927-97). Signed lower left. The floating figure of a baby has remarkable depth, balance and orientation and is presented in shades of blue and white. The apparent bars of a crib intersect with lattice work and globes that represent the planets, which the baby appears to be juggling. This work was probably made at Mario's south Florida studio in Fort Lauderdale. His style was primarily a form known as geometric design with illusions. Growing up in New York City Mario served in the U.S. military and afterwards studied at the Graduate School of Visual Arts and the University of Mexico. His art was inspired by Salvador Dali. This fine painting is typical of his extraordinary craftsmanship and precision where fantasy is superbly blended with realism. The original owner purchased this work, in the early 1980s, from the artist at the Coconut Grove Art Fair in Miami, Florida. Individual figures and lines were painted in acrylic and subsequently applied to the canvas. The canvas measures 35" x 35" and is displayed in the original silver metal frame measuring 36 1/2" x 36 1/2". Other than a few light surface scratches, this painting is in very good condition. PLEASE NOTE: The last photo is more representative of the shade of blue depicted in this painting.
