A Swedish early Gustavian period two-part wooden cabinet from the late 18th century, with original paint, carved accents, dentil molding, four doors and distressed patina. Created in Sweden during the last quarter of the 18th century, this wooden cabinet features a cornice with dentil molding, sitting above two doors adorned with recessed panels surrounded by faint turquoise accents. Showcasing its original painted finish with nicely distressed patina, the cabinet is decorated with patterned motifs. The upper doors open to reveal a distressed interior made of inner shelves offering convenient storage space. The central section presents an open shelf with unusual carved wavy motifs. The bottom part, of deeper proportions, features two additional doors opening thanks to a brass latch to inner shelves as well. The sides are faux painted with regular patterns while the back is unfinished. The cabinet boasts an undeniable weathered appearance that gives it great character. If you are on the hunt for a piece with age and history, this one is yours!
The Gustavian style takes its roots in the Louis XVI era. Swedish King Gustav III resided in 1771 in Paris, at the beginning stages of the Louis XVI style. There, he was inspired by French art and fashion. With that in his luggage, he had a strong desire to introduce something similar in Sweden. The country had fine craftsmen with high quality craftsmanship, who produced a simple style with harmonious aesthetics. The Gustavian style was born and has been in vogue ever since. It is incredibly popular, especially in England but also in France and in the USA. Price and age are of course inextricably linked, the older and rarer the higher the price!
With its original paint and great proportions, this Swedish Gustavian period cabinet circa 1780 will make for a great addition to any home, perhaps placed in a living room or kitchen. Follow us to keep up with our new inventory.
