Original c1956 gaetano cecere (1894-1985) "eunice" sculpture
this is an outstanding piece. Done by an incredibly important american sculpture of the 20th century, this is the work of gaetano cecere. For those not familiar with the artist his biography from who's who reads:
gaetano cecere, a sculptor and lecturer, was born in new york city on november 16, 1894. He was a student at the national academy of design, and named a national academician in 1938. He studied at the beaux-arts institute of design, and attended the american academy in rome, italy on a scholarship from 1920 to 1923. Memberhips in addition to the national academy of design included the national sculpture society and the new york architectural league. Exhibitions: national academy of design, 1924-1969 art institute of chicago, 1924-1927 pennsylvania academy 1924-1958 national sculpture society 1924-1958 whitney museum of american art, 1934 museum of modern art, 1935 allied artists of america, 1962-1964 knickerbocker artists 1962-1964 work/collections museum of modern art numismatic museum, ny norfolk, virginia museum reliefs: federal reserve bank, brookgreen gardens, norton gallery, victory war memorial, nj, monuments: lincoln memorial bridge, state of texas memorial to general, state of montana to explorer. Lectured: contemporary & ecclesiastical sculpture "a great american artist, loved by many, died with his family rose, al and nephews in old greenwich, ct on june 10, 1985"
this is an incredibly scarce piece. With how important this artist is and the amount of work that is out in public collections and museums, you would think there would be some records of some of his work having sold. Google the artist and you will find incredible images of his work throughout america. He is known for the second most well known lincoln monument at the lincoln memorial bridge in wisconsin. All that and none on the market or having ever sold. This is a clay sculpture I believe. The head measures 11 1/2 inches tall and stands on a 3 1/2 inches wood base. Overall the condition is very good with just some very minor surface loss as well as a layer of grime / patina. Signed at the base of her lower right neck. This piece has a great patina for the 50+ years it lived with the same family. Great as is or could be cleaned to its original color if desired.
This special piece was originally purchased at "exhibition of paintings and sculpture j havard macpherson ada rasario cecere gaetano cecere august 6th to 17th, 1956 gallery art club 33 south crystal st. East stroudsburg, penna.". Included with the sculpture is the original one sheet from this show. It also comes with an original press photo for another bust done by "peter a juley & son" (known to have taken other photos of cecere in smithsonian). In the photo the wood base is notated with a display number 16 and now has the original artists brass plate with title. Everything that you could want to come with a piece like this. Do your research on this artist and this work. See if you can find some of cecere's work in private hands. A truly special piece. A great american sculpture.
