Distinguished by its compact proportions, unusual wraparound back and extensive bobbin-turned construction, this antique oak chair offers both sculptural character and practical occasional seating.

The unusual wraparound back is formed by two perpendicular sections that meet at the central corner post, allowing the chair to sit naturally in a room corner or beside a fireplace. Each section features double horizontal rails joined by slender vertical spindles, while the prominent corner posts, legs and lower stretchers display the rhythmic stick-and-ball turning associated with traditional French country furniture. The numerous rounded elements create an animated silhouette and make the chair visually interesting from every angle.

An original hand-woven rush seat complements the warm brown oak. The rush is arranged in a traditional geometric pattern that emphasizes the chair’s square form and handcrafted construction. Unlike machine-made upholstery, this natural woven surface presents subtle variations in tone and texture. The rush seat remains strong and usable, while the oak frame is sturdy and structurally sound.

Known in France as a chaise coin du feu, meaning a fireside corner chair, this compact form was traditionally placed near the hearth. Its relatively low seat height and architectural back make it especially suitable as an antique fireside chair, occasional chair or decorative accent. It could also be used in an entryway, library, guest room, dressing room, bedroom or quiet reading corner. At only 17 inches wide and 17 inches deep, it provides antique presence without requiring the space of a conventional armchair.

The chair remains in good antique condition, with wear consistent with more than a century of age and use. The oak displays surface variation, rubbing, aged patina and numerous small historic insect holes that contribute to its authentic character. These holes appear to be from old woodworm activity; treatment history is unknown. The wood remains solid, and the chair is sturdy and usable.
