A long oval top of smoked glass, beveled at the edge, carried on two cylindrical columns sheathed in tan saddle leather. Each column stands on a broad, shallow disc of brushed stainless steel and is finished at the top with a polished stainless collar, to which the glass is coupled. The leather is worked around the column in a continuous spiral, every turn closed by a double row of hand saddle stitching, so that the seams climb the column like the rifling of a barrel and the eye is carried upward and around rather than straight up.

The construction is worth stating precisely, because it is where the cost of the piece sits. The columns are steel, fully coated in full-grain aniline hide; the hide is vegetable-tanned and cut from the shoulder, the most valuable part of the skin. The top is beveled tempered glass twelve millimeters thick, offered by the maker in clear or smoked, and today in marble as well; this is the smoked. The base discs and the coupling that carries the glass are stainless steel.

At 85 by 39¼ inches the table seats eight comfortably and takes ten at a push, and the two-column base leaves the ends and the long sides entirely clear of legs — which is why the model works as readily as an executive conference table as it does for dining.

The tan hide and brushed steel sit as comfortably with an antique Persian rug and dark floors as in a pared-back modern room, and the smoked glass keeps the long top visually light so that the two columns read as sculpture. It serves equally as a dining table, a conference table or a partners' desk in a study.

Condition
Excellent condition throughout. The leather is unfaded and unworn, the stitching sound, the stainless steel bright, and the glass top free of chips or edge damage.

Historical Context
Giancarlo Vegni was born in 1949 and studied at the art school at Cascina, near Pisa. He worked for Ferretti cucine from 1968 to 1975 before founding Vegnidesign, and made his name first in kitchens: the Misura collection for Effeti cucine of 1988 introduced the first round function block, and the Duetto oven made by Officine Star was entered in the selections for the Compasso d'Oro in 1991. His work is consistently described by clean lines, modular geometry and a preference for round forms, and the studio has since ranged across the whole field of design.

The long association is with Fasem of Tuscany, a maker specializing in leather furniture, and it is the Fasem chairs of the 1980s — steel frames sheathed in saddle leather — that carry Vegni's name in the secondary market. The Rolling tables put the same idea on a table base, and they remain in Fasem's current range, round as Rolling and in this two-column oval form as Rolling 2B, with a choice of leather colors. The standard Rolling 2B is now 95 inches (240 cm) long, listed at the time of writing by one American retailer from $8,315 with clear glass and $8,635 with smoked; the 85-inch length offered here is now a special-order size. This is the smoked-glass version on natural tan hide, in excellent condition and available immediately.
