Antique early 19th century Georgian penwork box decorated with classical scenes from Greek and Etruscan vases after Sir William Hamilton. Basket form with swing handle and two compartments. A rare color combination. Retains original baize on the underside. Good original condition with minor wear consistent with age. Measures 9 1/2 long " x 7" wide.
Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803) was British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples. During his time in Italy, Hamilton was fascinated with the excavations at Pompei and Herculaneum. He became an avid collector of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities, including antique vases. He published engravings of his new collection before the vases were sent to the British Museum.
