A large-scale 17th century Spanish carving of Christ on the cross. Possibly of a much earlier date, the features and posture owing much to Byzantine depictions of Christ, especially the stylized face, a beautiful realization of serenity. Mounted on a steel base.
Provenance - Ex collection: Piero Tozzi, an antiquarian, and art dealer who had galleries in New York and Florence mid 20th century. Tozzi specialized in Italian decorative arts, sculpture and paintings. Tozzi sold work to individual collectors, galleries and institutions including, the Art Institute of Chicago, Cincinnati Art Museum, Walters Art Museum and the Metropolitan Art Museum.
