Large pair 19th century English Staffordshire pearlware poodles with heavily applied vermicelli or sieved clay ears, tails and coats, circa 1850. Wonderful expressions with yellow eyes, pink muzzles, gold collars and separately articulated front legs. Each sits on its tail with nicely detailed haunches and gray painted front paws. The smoothly glazed sections of the dogs' backs are similar to early creamware.
Measure 11" tall. Good condition - staining on the back of one figure, crazing and minor loss of applied vermicelli. Display beautifully and a true facing pair.
For a similar example of this early form see Clive Mason Pope's book "A-Z of Staffordshire Dogs, A Potted History" page 139.
We have another pair listed - smaller in size.
