“Butterfly 4” is an original ink, white chalk, and colored pencil painting by artist James Repton, on medium gray heavy-stock paper, the second piece in the 30 Butterflies Series. The painting’s dimensions are 8 1/2 x 11”. This original work of art ships in a white frame, overall dimensions 11 x 14”. The work is signed on the front “JR ’22”, and the artist’s name, title, media, dimensions, and date created are written on the back of the piece.
Here is a little bit about the 30 Butterflies Series, in the artist’s own words:
In the Chauvet Cave paintings of France, painted from 30,000 to 33,000 years ago, we have paintings of horses, lions, buffalo, and other animals, including what appears to be a butterfly.*
Most species of butterfly live only 1-2 weeks. I find this fact quite beautiful. Every butterfly you see, paddling by in midair, will not be alive very much longer. I savor my butterfly encounters as much as possible, knowing it is unlikely me and that butterfly will ever meet again. And so, I take in the full colors of its wings, the meandering drowsiness of its flight.
This project, 30 Butterflies, is borne both from my interest in drawing and painting butterflies as well as their ubiquity in popular visual culture, for what seems like a very long time. In honor of the 30,000 year-old butterflies, alive forever on a cave wall, I offer 30 butterfly paintings of my own. I enjoy painting butterflies, and drawing and painting animals in general. I am the same, genetically, as a 30,000-year-old cave artist. Because 30,000-year-old humans were identical to modern-day humans on a genetic level, in a literal sense they were us, they are us. If we know almost nothing about them, their culture, their other rituals and rites, we do know, like us, they enjoyed painting animals.
All 30 of the butterfly paintings began with a sumi ink sketch on paper. Next, white chalk to bring up the brightest lights and add a layer of luminosity. Finally, colored pencil.
*my pet theory as amateur cave painting non-expert: the depiction is of a ribcage not a butterfly.
