Most often these pharmacies were convents and monasteries and the albarelos were decorated with crests or coat-of-arms associated with the various religious orders. The jars were formed with the center tapered to allow for a secure grip when handling the jar and would have been covered paper or parchment and tied with a string. Occasionally they have a coordinating terra cotta lid. They are impressive displayed in collections and an image of a collection is included. See less
