Gansu cabinet from the 19th century, beautifully detailed, hand-painted panels dipicting figures, floral and fauna. Rich, red background and ebonized case with red undertones. Cabinet features two doors opening to shelving.
The raised, or embossed, decorative technique is known as kyungbur. It is done by building up and molding gesso in a labor intensive and time consuming process. In this case, the raised kyungbur work is especially high, adding texture, depth, and animation to the decoration.
