In this playful depiction of a harlequin, Pablo Picasso uses soft lines and shading in his fairly-naturalistic portrayal of the theater character in costume. Standing while removing part of his costume from one of his legs, the harlequin holds one hand on his waist and looks to the side. Created before he shifted completely into Modernist techniques, this portrait clearly shows a male figure with athletic physique in checkered costume, although the faint background and lack of details indicate the artist's movement toward Cubism.
