This scene was immortalized by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) nicknamed "the Sculptor of the Enlightenment", one of the most important sculptors of the 18th century and particularly of the Neo-Classical period. Appreciated for the realistic rendering of his works and his extraordinary talent, it was at the Royal Academy that the young prodigy won in 1761 the first prize for sculpture known as the Prix de Rome.
"The Kiss Given" represents a young man wearing a headband on his wavy hair, languidly embracing a young woman dressed in a steamy dress delicately revealing her breasts.
A crown of flowers unites the two lovers, underlining their love and attraction.
The young woman abandons herself, wrapped in the arms of her beloved, in this ode to sensuality.
This work is presented on a pedestal resting on a circular charcoal gray marble veined with white.
