Marcel Mouly (1918-2008)
Mouly is one of the most important artists of the modern era. His ability to combine aspects of Cubism, Impressionism, and Fauvism into his own unique artistic style has set him apart as an artist. His ability to combine disciplines also played a significant role in shaping the history of French art and modern art around the world during the twentieth century. His paintings were such a success that his art career took off instantly. By 1948, he had gained a substantial international following and was exhibiting art across the globe. His use of brushstrokes harkened back to Impressionism, while his use of bold colors was considered a Fauvist influence. He was also very influenced by Picasso and Braque and incorporated the Cubist use of multiple perspectives on a single canvas. Mouly most frequently painted female figures, harbor scenes, and still life works. His ability to create a style completely unique to him and his willingness to experiment set him apart as an artist and carved out his own place in the history of modern art. His work can be seen in museums all over the world including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and the Museum of Geneva, as well as in many independent art collections. He is remembered today for both his beautiful artwork and his important contribution to modern art history.
