Prolific artist, Richard Andrew painter, teacher, and lecturer was born on January 9, 1869 in Belfast, Ireland and died in 1956, in Gloucester, Mass. Andrew specialized in murals, landscapes, and portraits and was a department head at the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston.
We have included a book about his life, "Called to Paint".
This beautifully illustrated book, Richard Andrew: Called to Paint, chronicles the life, artwork, and achievements of the 20th century artist, Richard Andrew.
Popular for his deeply sensitive portraits and breathtaking landscapes, the artist was most recognized for his contribution to honor the 104th Massachusetts Infantry that performed with great distinction during World War I. His extraordinary murals line the walls of the third floor of the Massachusetts State House Legislative Chambers.
You will receive this beautiful (excellent/new condition) book as well as an early painting in original frame of his version of Eastern Point Lighthouse in Gloucester Massachusetts.
(The original in the book is in a private collection)
Our listing looks to be a preliminary painting and stated on the back handwritten provenance, "Eastern Point Light, sketch made on the spot by Rochard Andrew" (see photo). We suspect the painting in the book based on this smaller sketch/painting.
The painting is signed by artist bottom left.
It is on canvas board. It could use a cleaning. It also has two small holes in top corners. (See photos) Paint has some crazing as to be expected. Circa date late 1930s early 1940s.
Frame has wear shown as well.
