M. … Read more Bonus two-sided watercolor works with a different plein air painting on each side by listed American painter Prescott M. M. Jones. The tall purple mountain composition is executed with an abstract feel, owing to the loose sweeping application of brush strokes suggesting the mountain and tree forms rather than precisely defining them. The alternate side with a coastal dock scene and men in a small boat is executed in a color block style utilized to define the structure of the waterfront shacks and houses. Both settings are likely New England scenes. The mountain side is dated 1937 and the nautical scene is dated 1936. Neither are signed.

We obtained many pieces from a portfolio of works by Prescott M. M. Jones (1904-1981). Jones' works are in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Smithsonian, among other art institutions. He studied art under noted Rockport, Massachusetts artist William Hazelton at Tufts. During the Depression, Jones was employed by the WPA art program.

Unframed, excellent condition without issues. Executed on heavy art paper stock. Both works employ rich saturated jewel tone colors: Purple and green and blue with touches of yellow in the mountain work, and the same in the harbor dock scene, though the colors are used in entirely different ways on the two sides. Both works are equally well executed - it will be hard to decide which to display first!
