Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry, impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas. Painting is on panel with original frame. Great condition, no damage; see photos.

Van Hoople was born in Chicago, IL but was referred to as a California artist. He attended the University of Texas and worked for Paramount Studios in Hollywood and apprenticed for Cecil B Demilles and scene director P.T. Blackburn. He was under exclusive contract to Hillside Galleries starting in 1957. His works have received notable recognition throughout the U.S., and he is becoming more recognizable throughout the world. His paintings are characterized by a deep, almost high relief, impasto, as if the paint were cut with a gouge. They are classic Mid Century, blending well with interiors decorated with furnishings and fixtures of the time.
