19th Century French Napoleon III Period Walnut Buffet with Carrara Marble reflects a fascinating period in French history when all the styles were revived, including the timeless neoclassical style championed the previous century by Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette. This example was designed taller and more shallow than normal, for an obviously grander scale in wall height, and for minimal impact on the traffic flow in the room or hall. The rounded sides accentuate the beneficial aspects of the footprint, as well, and provide exceptional visual appeal from all angles. Sumptuous indigenous walnut was used for the casework, with tailored lines enhanced by raised panels and fluted pilasters that appear on all four corners. A process called ebonizing was employed to provide contrast to the curved, raised panels on the sides, as well as the framework surrounding all four of the main panels below. Most striking is the ebonized carved detailing that appears on the flats of the cabinet doors, depicting the timeless symbols of the power and longevity of the French monarchy expressed with the torchere and carquois de fleche, suspended by ribbon with a backdrop of olive branches symbolizing peace through power. The ebonized carvings both contrast and complement the richness of the walnut panel upon which they are placed. Bold molded detail pervades the design, with turned feet providing support. To top it all off, a beautifully beveled piece of subtly veined Carrara marble contoured to follow the casework below!
