Signed lower right, 'Stalter' for Richard Stalter (American, born 1934) and painted circa 1965.
A lyrical oil still-life showing a variety of ceramic objects including a floral decorated, tin-glazed earthenware sugar-pot set on an aqua-glaze earthenware plate and a lilac-glazed, small bowl set on a saffron-ochre tabletop.
Born in Ohio, Richard Stalter developed an early interest in art and gained recognition for his work in high school. In 1958, while visiting New York, he met and befriended the impressionist painter, Bernard Lennon and began to paint again seriously. In 1964, he moved to Connecticut to study with Lennon and thus began his professional career as a fine artist. 1964 also marked the beginning of his regular participation in the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit (New York City) and the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival (Mystic, Connecticut). Over the course of a long and successful career, Stalter has exhibited widely and with success and has been the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including First Prize in Oils four times at the Mystic Art Festival. Richard Stalter lives and paints in Gaylordsville, Connecticut and is a long-time member of New York's Salmagundi Club.
