An interesting set of nautical drinking glasses featuring historical ships from the era of sail.
The first ship depicted is the “Rainbow” an early example of the clipper ship built by Smith & Dimon of New York. The ship weighed 752 tons, carried three masts and was considered as an highly influential ship of its period. It was launched in 1845, and had its maiden voyage which took 79 days from New York to Macao in 1846 and was lost mysteriously in 1848. It was captained by John Land and owned by Howland & Aspinwall.
The second ship was the Great Republic which when launched in 1853 was the largest wooden ship in the world weighing in at over 3300 tons and made a voyage from New York to the Equator in 15 days and 19 hours. Built by D. McKay , captained by J. Limeburner and owned by A.A. Low & Bros. The ship foundered during a hurricane in 1872.
