The view travels along the Via Sacra running through the Roman Forum. In the foreground, the remains of the Temple of Caesar followed by the portico of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina with the superimposed Chiesa di San Lorenzo di Miranda built within it. The Basilica di Santa Francesca di Romana and bell tower of the Olivetan Monastery and the Arch of Titus complete the view. Faint pencil marks show the outline of the painting. Quick and sure brushwork brings the work to life. It is the type of work encouraged for architecture and fine arts students until the rise of Modernism. It is not visibly signed and we have not examined it out of frame. The frame is simple but beautifully detailed, matt black center with maple to either side with a gold toned edging on the inside edge. It appears to have been framed in the 40s or 50s. less
