The surface of the jar features a celadon glaze and an elaborate incised design of large floral and leaves, possibly representing peony. Particularly, one side of vase shows the same pattern but in reverse with the relief glazed in a darker color. There are also areas in between with mottled glaze that caused surface pitting. Our hypothesis is that this might be the result of a kiln misfired with one side under a substantial temperature or oxygen condition and perhaps also partially fallen. This piece presents an honesty and a beauty despite of the flaws. See less
